Teacher Diaries – Ms. Alison

It is always easy to spot young children making great improvement in concept formation and ability of expression at i-Learner, especially when they are exposed to a fun learning environment. Seeing teenagers improving their analytical skills is certainly something equally impressive, as their way of thinking has been pretty much consolidated and their course of progress is supposed to slow down as they reach the plateau of a learning curve.

With small-scale teaching, students facing public exams can benefit from the class as the teacher knows more about their strengths and weaknesses and can then promptly respond to their needs by providing all sorts of useful materials. It is also a golden chance for the students to raise questions. When this student first attended the DSE Junior course a months ago, she was already above average in reading skills among her peers, though she needed help in organising her ideas in a better way and building up her confidence in oral practice.

Through practice papers, open discussion and role plays, she has been gradually gaining confidence to speak up in front of others. I can also tell that she has become more mature and argumentative in thinking, which is manifested in her being able to fulfill most of the requirements of the question and structure her writing in a manner which is appropriate to the genre. In the rest of the course, the students will be more engaged in thought-provoking discussion to stimulate their critical thinking in brainstorming ideas on social issues, and of course, they will be armed with the ability to tackle a wide range of question formats in the DSE exam. I look forward to witnessing their success in the DSE exam!

This is a writing task based on Paper 2 of DSE. Students are given a set of data file which they have to analyze the information given and write an evaluation report on the effectiveness of the four language institutions mentioned. In terms of content and organization, in spite of the fact that the girl missed the point of suggesting which language school is the best in the conclusion, the composition is actually quite well-organized in general.
