How to Manage Stress During Exam Preparation

Students often work so hard preparing for their exams that they forget to take care of themselves properly. High stress levels actually hamper our ability to perform well, meaning overpreparation can be just as bad as under preparation. It’s important to monitor and manage stress levels during exam periods, and here are some tactics for doing that.

Sleep is an excellent stress buster, and even short naps during the day can reset a struggling mind. Studies show that sleep is vital to stress management, especially in young people, who need more sleep than adults. Naps as short as 20 minutes can be revitalising, but it shouldn’t replace sleep at night, which is vital to brain function.

Music and food are great companions for managing stress, especially as focusing on these forces us to take a short break in a busy day. Students should be encouraged to pick healthy snacks, such as fruit and nuts. Instead of drinking coffee with these, they can try green tea or fresh juices to stabilise energy levels without overconsuming caffeine. Listening to a favourite song at the same time, and perhaps even taking a dance break, can boost energy levels far better than phone scrolling.

Exercise is another tried and tested stress solution. Walking outside increases levels of vitamin D at the same time as getting the blood pumping. Students reluctant to take a break might be encouraged if given the job of walking the family dog. The walk could even be combined with some socialising if a friend lives nearby. In a short, simple break, stressed learners can chat with friends, stretch their legs, and feel revitalised.

Learning how to manage stress is just as important as acing an algebra test, so it’s worth students taking time to try a few tips and swap relaxation ideas with their friends.
